Well, that was eventful. After 7 months of nothing but wins, Sheffield United lost. It might have been in controversial circumstances what with a late Boro own goal being disallowed for offside, we still lost and really got a wake up call. We came across a Boro team that had just come down from the Premier League and has no real intentions of staying in this division longer than a year. However we can come away from that game with some positives, had it not been for a rare Chris Basham defensive error I think we could have come away with a draw and maybe, , MAYBE... even a win?... because in that second half we reduced that Boro team to a few simple shots on our goal which proves that we do have a solid defence and that should see us come good more often than not this season. Anyway onto Saturday... as I write this, its currently Monday evening at about five to nine and we are yet to play Cardiff so this preview may change depending on that result. But lets focus on Saturday. Its the first South Yorkshire derby of the season and will be a full blooded affair. Going into the match, the Blades have no real injury concerns apart from right back George Baldock who is yet to make his competitive debut for the Blades and goalkeeper Simon Moore who is yet to recover from an injury suffered at Rotherham in pre season. So, the opposition. Barnsley. The Tykes have not had the greatest start to the season and are one of only 3 teams (as of writing) to gain a point in the league losing out to Bristol City and Ipswich in the opening two games of the season. Its early days but this start most be worrying to manager Paul Heckingbottom. So, potential dangermen for the Tykes? Striker Tom Bradshaw was lethal at Walsall before joining Barnsley, scoring 17 goals in his last season at the Bescot and scoring 8 in the championship last season and opened his account for the season against Ipswich last time out. George Moncur is another talented young player that Barnsley have at their disposal. The former West Ham academy graduate came to prominence as part of a talented Colchester midfield alongside Alex Gilbey. Moncur managed to grab 12 goals and 4 assists in his last season for Colchester before moving to Barnsley however, appearances have been limited since joining however Moncur is a talented player and will surely be looking to push for a starting berth this season. So how do I think the Blades will do? Well, I think our defence is watertight enough to repel the attacking nous of Bradshaw and co. And after conceding 5 goals in their opening 2 games I believe our frontline will have enough in it to beat Barnsley comfortably. I'm going for a 3-1 Blades win.
