The last time I had a 'traditional' (if you can call energy drinks traditional) energy drink was probably back in March. I'd just been to see someone in hospital after our loss to Bristol City and fancied being perked up. So I looked in the hospital vending machine to see what they had. They had the usual, your Lucozade's, your Mountain Dew's etc. But instead I went for Carabao. I'd never had it before and decided that there was no time like the present to take my first sips. If I'm being honest, I wasn't that impressed. I'm no energy drink connoisseur but I thought It would at least taste of something, not just a slight metallic twang. It also didn't help that it had a weird brown colour. So what does this have to do with Sheffield United vs Blackburn? Well, the competition we were playing in tonight was the Carabao Cup (FKA The Capital One Cup, FKA, The Carling Cup as well as many other names). So now I'm done with the energy drink itself, how was the match?
First off, OH MY GOD THOSE NEW FLOODLIGHTS ARE BRIGHT I NO LONGER HAVE WORKING RETINAS. Seriously, when the ball was played above The South Stand you couldn't see it due to fear of being blinded by our powerful new floodlights (Premier League regulations baybeeeeeeee). So, the first half, United didn't start well and Blackburn looked dangerous early on with an Adam Armstrong effort going narrowly wide of Simon Moore's post. Not long after this, deja vu struck. Bradley Dack was in on goal when an errant tackle from Richard Stearman brought him down. Penalty. Richard was the man who was responsible for the penalty conceded to Barnet back in January so as Dack stepped up to take the penalty I had 'Nam style flashbacks. Except this time, Simon Moore saved the penalty! Yay! We're not losing! After this you'd think the match would liven up, it didn't. Very little happened. Blackburn were dominating but never looked like scoring and we didn't look like we were too bothered about attacking. Oh wait, hold on, we've scored! And it's that man Big Dick Stearman nodding in at the back post. Ok that's cool, let's build on that then... No? Jesus can I go back to reviewing energy drinks? Wait, we've only gone and scored again! Oli Norwood scoring an absolute banger of a goal, seriously, he scored it with THE OUTSIDE OF HIS BOOT! What a baller. Oh look it's half time and despite being battered like a Whitby fish we're somehow 2-0 up. Isn't that nice? Second half starts and nothing is happening again. This is incredibly boring apart from the occasional Mo Besic sliding tackle. Oooooo Sam Gallagher has come on for Blackburn, we could have signed him and he's scored. Well, that came out of no where. At least now it'll probably be more interesting? No, no it wasn't. LITERALLY NOTHING HAPPENED. Oh, Mousset came on, he did a run. That was interesting. That's about all I can say to be honest. For a game that had a penalty, three goals and a manager sending off (forgot to mention, Tony Mowbray got sent off with like a minute left) this match was incredibly boring. But, United won. and at the end of the day that's all that really matters. Guess this is it then, well... I'll see you next time! Hopefully I'll be reporting on something more interesting. As ever, UTB.

It's about half past 12 and I've just been dropped off near John Street. It's a drop off point that has been used time and time again over the past 5 years but this time it feels different. There's a real tinge of excitement in the air as I walk down John Street to my turnstile. Again, it's all so very familiar and yet something feels different. It only hits me when I see the pitch what that different feeling is. The Premier League logo draped just in front of the centre circle. Oh so last season wasn't just a dream then? We really did defy the odds and secure AUTOMATIC PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE? Yes. Yes we did. There's been some other changes as well. First off, there's a big grey box that looks like something out of Arrival stationed in the gap between The Kop and The South Stand (this is our new TV studio space), and there's now a massive LED advertising board on the back of The John Street Stand. Apart from that though, it's still the same old ground. The same old ground that I and many others have been to for years and years and years. It might have had a bit of a spruce up, but the heart of what makes Bramall Lane great is still there.
I've been in the ground for about an hour now and it's 30 minutes till kick off. Our Red and White Wizards have been warming up for about 20 minutes. The bibs indicate that Lundstram starts again, I'm guessing not many people online are happy about that and Sharp's not starting either, neither is McBurnie. The stadium continues to fill and I'm happy that all the D block regulars are back for another season. We don't talk to each other much on matchdays but it's nice to see all of them have retained their seats. The atmosphere is slowly building as we all anticipate the kick off of Premier League football for the first time at Bramall Lane since 2007. The music blares, the stadium continues to fill, I'm feeling proud and nervous. Proud because these boys have more than earned their shot at the big boys. They have brought this proud old club back to heights that seemed impossible 3 years ago. But I'm a bit nervous. Palace are a decent outfit, they still have Zaha and Townsend is a tidy player. They could cause problems. How do we neutralise them? Those thoughts drift away as fire bursts from small black boxes at pitch side and the players are met with a noise so loud I think they could hear us in Blackpool. We are Sheffield United and we are Premier League. The Greasy Chip Buttie song rings in the ears as The Blades get us under way. Palace get an early foothold but apart from a Benteke half chance, never really threaten Henderson. United take a while to get going but Stevens volleys in the box. It strikes an arm. Handball? No. Play continues. Fleck goes down. Freeman is on and the Blades start to play. Freeman plays a delightful ball into Callum Robinson and he takes a brilliant touch. The stadium holds its breath. Its over the bar but this is better. On the cusp of halftime, Van Aanholt stuggkes to control a pass and Lundstram nicks it away. Quick one two with Robinson and the balls into McGoldrick. OH MY GOO- wait, he missed? How'd he do that? No matter, we've got them on the ropes, second half we'll show them how it's done. The second half starts with United continuing to dominate and that domination pays off. O'Connell to Enda and he's played in Freeman. Freeman sends his man for a pint of Magnet and he's had a shot. It's spilled and OH MY GOD JOHN LUNDSTRAM! NO WAY! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! THE MAD LAD HAS DONE IT! Noise erupts from everywhere. It's pandemonium and I love it. John Lundstram. The guy who wasn't even a Championship regular, the guy who has had so much stick since he couldn't become Paul Coutts, has just scored Sheffield United's first home goal in the Premier League for 12 years. Now if your a regular reader you'll know I have flown the Lundstram flag for a while, this moment was incredible. You literally couldn't script it. Sheffield United 1, Crystal Palace 0. We didn't even stop there, Norwood played an absolute peach of a ball to Baldock that really is NSFW and if you watch it, make sure you've got some clean underwear to hand. Not only that, Enda is busting out roulettes. WHAT. IS. HAPPENING. McBurnie came on for Robinson and oh my is this lad special. He plays like an octopus. It's just limbs going everywhere and he definitely upset Scott Dann. The thing is, Palace had no answer. They looked clueless. It was the most convincing 1-0 I've seen for a long time. After 7 minutes of non descript injury time United did it. Three points on the board. Another deafening roar from the fans as United players celebrated a much deserved victory. It was a professional performance and one that every player on that pitch should be proud of. We showed that we could hang with an established Premier League team and that we just aren't here to make up the numbers. It's Leicester up next, and I hope that they're ready to compete because they'll be in a war next weekend. We're not just here to play, we're here to win. As ever, UTB. Another transfer window has been and gone and United have brought in 10 new faces to Bramall Lane since deals started being brokered in July. Let's have a look at those ten lucky lads.
Luke Freeman Signed from: QPR Previous clubs: Gillingham, Arsenal, Yeovil Town, Stevenage, Bristol City, QPR Total appearances/goals: 320/39 Honours: League One Winner 2014/15, Football League Trophy 2014/15, Montaigu Tournament winner 2008, Football League Young Player of the Month award April 2012, Stevenage Player of the Year 2013-14, PFA Team of the Year: League One 2014-15, QPR Player of the Year 2018-19 Transfer fee paid: £5 million United didn't take a long time in breaking the transfer record this summer with Luke Freeman being the first of 4 players who would earn the honour of most expensive player for United. After starting his career with stints at Charlton and Gillingham, Freeman would be picked up by the Arsenal in 2008 for a fee of around £200,000. Being described by Arsene Wenger as a 'very interesting prospect' Freeman would spend the next 4 years in and around the youth setup at Arsenal with spells at Yeovil Town and Stevenage thrown in for good measure. Freeman was pretty prolific at academy level but was never quite able to break into The Gunner's first XI. Freeman would re-join Stevenage at the start of the 2012-13 season and would go onto make 39 appearances that season chipping in with 2 goals. Freeman would then have a cracking 2013-14 season that saw him be an almost ever present, making 45 appearances in the league and scoring 6 goals. Despite Freeman's efforts, Stevenage were relegated to League Two. Freeman would pick up Stevenage's Player of the Year award but moved during the summer to Bristol City. Freeman once again impressed at League One level and was crucial as City won the League and also the FL Trophy. Freeman was voted into the League One PFA Team of the Year for the 2014-15 season. Freeman again impressed for City on their first campaign back in the Championship and was having a stormer of a second season until contract negotiations hampered his involvement. Freeman was sold to QPR in the January 2017 transfer window. Freeman had an extremely fruitful spell during his time with The Hoops and in his two full season's there made 88 appearances scoring 12 times. After contributing 7 goals in 43 appearances last term and earning the club's Player of the Year award, United pulled the trigger and brought Freeman in. Freeman has been one of the top performers in The Championship as of late so his signing, at the price we got him for, is a real coup. Full credit must go to Wilder and the negotiating team for getting this over the line. Phil Jagielka Signed from: Everton Previous clubs: Sheffield United, Everton Total appearances/goals: 576/32 Honours: Championship runner-up 2005-06, FA Cup runner up 2008-09, Championship Player of the Year 2005-06, Premier League Player of the Month February 2009, PFA Team of the Year (2003-04, 2005-06), Sheffield United Player of the Year (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07), Everton Player of the Season (2008-09, 2014-15), Everton Player's Player of the Season (2008-09, 2014-15), Everton Goal of the Season 2014-15 Transfer fee: Free Twelve years to the day since he left Bramall Lane, Phil Jagielka returned to Sheffield United. After being linked in seemingly every transfer window for the past couple of years, he's back. Some people criticised this signing as simply being sentimental and that Jags is back simply to see his career out and then begin his coaching career. The fact of the matter is that Phil Jagielka is still a very good footballer. Since turning 30 during the 2012-13 season, Phil Jagielka has made 179 Premier League appearances with 25 coming in the 2017-18 season when he turned 35. Another factor in bringing Jagielka back is his vast Premier League experience. A player like him will be an excellent addition to a dressing room that has players that haven't played the majority of their careers in the top flight like he has. Not only that, but Jags has also made 40 appearances for England as well as captaining his country. Could you imagine what players like Jack O'Connell and John Egan could learn from him? So, no this isn't just a way for Jags to see out his playing career. This is a signing that could prove to be a very good one both on the training ground and on the big stage. Callum Robinson Signed from: Preston North End Previous clubs: Aston Villa, Bristol City, Preston North End Total appearances/goals: 159/35 Honours: N/A Transfer fee: £7 million Now this guy looks like he's going to be the real deal. Robinson had a very impressive 2018-19 season for Preston where he bagged 12 goals in 27 League games. This total could have been even higher had he not picked up a serious injury during the middle of the season. Robinson has been a revelation in pre season so far with goals against Barnsley and Stade de Reims showing how good he could be. He can play in a variety of positions in the attacking third and his blistering pace is an asset that United haven't had access to for a long, long time. The fact that he's only 24 just makes this deal look even better. This guy is definitely one to watch this season. Ravel Morrison Signed from: Ostersund Previous clubs: Manchester United, West Ham United, Birmingham City, QPR, Cardiff City, Lazio, Atlas, Ostersund Total appearances/goals: 100/15 Honours: Championship Play Off winner 2013-14, Championship Player of the Month March 2014 Transfer fee: Free What is there to write about Ravel Morrison that hasn't already been written or spoken about before? The player who Sir Alex Ferguson recognised as the most talented player he had ever seen. The player who, at one time, was seen as the star of a Manchester United academy class that included players like Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard. Ravel Morrison is an enigma. A player that seemingly had the world at his feet yet he's been spending the last few years in Mexico and Sweden. Morrison's talent has never been in doubt, he's probably one of the most talented players at Sheffield United now. His attitude has seemingly always let him down. There are reports of misdemeanours and bad behaviour that seem to follow him wherever he goes. Believe it or not, Morrison is only 26. His peak years are still ahead of him but you get the feeling that this could be his last chance at top flight football in England. If Morrison and knuckles down and puts the hard yards in, then he could potentially go on to be one of the best players that United have had in recent years. I for one hope he does have a brilliant year and that he goes onto be a hero for United. The floor is yours Ravel, best of luck. Lys Mousset Signed from: AFC Bournemouth Previous clubs: Le Havre II, Le Havre, AFC Bournemouth Total appearances/goals: 91/17 Honours: N/A Transfer fee: £10 million I didn't think that I'd see the day that United would spend a 7 figure sum on a player. I also didn't think that United would be signing an international player any time soon. Well, Lys Mousset saw both of those beliefs being shattered when he signed for United in mid July. Mousset graduated from the prestigious Le Havre academy that has produced players like Riyad Mahrez, Steve Mandanda, Dimitri Payet and Paul Pogba. After an impressive 2015-16 season that saw him score 14 goals in 28 games, Bournemouth payed a fee of around £6.7 million for his services. Mainly used as an impact player off the bench, Mousset struggled to get in the starting line up and was sold to United. Although the £10 million fee seems steep at the minute for a player who has only scored 3 Premier League goals, Mousset hasn't been a regular at Bournemouth and with player like Joshua King and Callum Wilson ahead of you, it's going to be hard to get in the starting XI and, by all accounts, Mousset has always done relatively well in his role as livewire whenever he has been called upon. Not to mention the fact that he's still only 23. He's a young player who I'm sure when given regular game time will surprise a few people. Ben Osborn Signed from: Nottingham Forest Previous clubs: Nottingham Forest Total appearances/goals: 212/15 Honours: Nottingham Forest Academy Player of the Year 2011-12, Nottingham Forest Goal of the Season 2014-15, Football League Young Player of the Month January 2016, Nottingham Forest Player of the Season 2017-18 Transfer fee: £3.5 million Osborn was a little out of left field. He was mentioned as a potential target early on in the window, then that interest seemed to cool as he went to Greece with Forest on their pre season tour. Then all of a sudden, the fee was agreed and we now have a Ben Osborn on our hands. So why sign Osborn? Well, I think that comes from his ability to play a multitude of positions. Although he appears to have been brought in as competition for Enda's left back spot, Osborn can play pretty much anywhere. That versatility could prove crucial in a Premier League campaign that, although not as long as the Football League season, is still 38 games against world class players pretty much week in, week out. Osborn could be rotated into any position asked of him and do a decent job. He's already had a good start, scoring and impressing on his debut against Barnsley, lets see if he can keep it up. I hope he does! Dean Henderson Signed from: Manchester United Previous clubs: Manchester United, Stockport County, Grimsby Town, Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield United Total appearances/goals: 100/0 Honours: EFL Trophy runner up 2017-18, Championship runner up 2018-19, FIFA Under 20 World Cup winner 2017, PFA League One Team of the Year 2017-18, Sheffield United Young Player of the Year 2018-19, Sheffield United Community Player of the Year 2018-19, Championship Golden Glove 2018-19 Transfer fee: Loan He's back! Of course he is! He had us all going for a little bit but he's here now and that's all that matters. Dean Henderson was a revelation between the sticks last season and was sometimes the reason why we might have come away with either a point or three instead of none. Performances against Rotherham and Birmingham (both times) spring to mind when talking about Deano's heroics. After going to the Under 21 Euros, it was assumed that Deano would be back with us pronto. That didn't happen. Oh well, Man Utd will want to have a look at him, he'll be here before the game against Betis. He's going to Singapore with the rest of the Man Utd squad you say? Well... Surely he's just going to sign his new Man Utd contract? Why is it taking so long to sign some paper? Deano, we've lost to Burton. Deano we beat Northampton but you weren't there. Please come back Deano pl- oh! Look, there he is! All joking aside, its good to have a keeper back who built an almost telepathic link with the defence and knows the United system well. Who knows? This could be Henderson's last season in a Blades shirt, or, it could be the first of many? Let's not focus on that just yet, let's just enjoy Deano while we still can. It's good to have you back! Oli McBurnie Signed from: Swansea City Previous clubs: Bradford City, Chester, Newport County, Bristol Rovers, Barnsley, Swansea City Total appearances/goals: 112/39 Honours: N/A Transfer fee: £17.5 million (!) Oh my. Oh my god. Holy moly. What's happened to my club!? Why are we spending nearly £20 million on a single player!? We don't do that! What about the £20 million budget? Well, turns out, we had a budget more than £20 million. Oli McBurnie and United have come into a bit of slack over the last few days. People say McBurnie isn't worth the fee. He's a Championship player, £17.5 million for a Championship player is absurd they said. Well, lets have a look at why we spent that amount on him. McBurnie really burst onto the scene during the back end of the 2017-18 season with Barnsley. During his 17 appearances for The Tykes, he scored 9 goals. Not bad for a player that was playing in a team that would ultimately relegated to League One that year. After that, he comes back to Swansea as they begin their Championship campaign after a few years in the Premier League. McBurnie went on to score 22 goals in 42 League games. Now those numbers are pretty impressive, those numbers are usually attributed to players who are playing in contending teams. Swansea didn't contend last season, they finished 10th. The nearest player to McBurnie in The Swans scoring charts scored 8. In terms of finishing off big chances in the Championship last season, the average was around 40%, McBurnie's conversion rate was 57.7%. Now if those stats don't tell you why we paid the money we did, I don't know what else to tell you. Perhaps we signed him because of his beard. He does have a good beard. Michael Verrips Signed from : KV Mechelen Previous clubs: Jong FC Twente, FC Twente, Jong Sparta, Sparta Rotterdam, MVV Maastricht, KV Mechelen Total appearances/goals: 79/0 Honours: N/A Transfer fee: Free The first of two deadline day signings, Verrips has been a rumoured signing for a while and it wasn't a shock to see him come in late on deadline day. What is up for debate is how he got here. So Verrips believes that his contract with KV Mechelen is no longer valid due to Mechelen being convicted of match fixing. Mechelen don't agree with this and think that he's still under contract. Allegedly, Mechelen claim that United had agreed a fee with them as of Wednesday but by Thursday that fee had been withdrawn and that United unveiling him as a free signing was in breach of contract. Hopefully, the fact that he has been signed is due to United doing their research legally to ensure that nothing is being done wrong. Apart from that, he's 6ft 5in and has hands and fingers the length of my face so... That's a positive I guess? I don't know, I'm sure everything will be fine. Mo Besic Signed from: Everton Previous clubs: Hamburger SV II, Hamburger SV, Ferencvaros, Middlesbrough, Everton Total appearances/goals: 177/4 Honours: Ligakupa 2012-13 Transfer fee: Loan Our 10th and final signing could be our most high profile signing. Besic is a bit of a midfield destroyer and perhaps has that bite that the United midfield has been missing. Besic was born in Germany but represents Bosnia through his parents. He's made around 40 appearances for Bosnia and appeared at the 2014 World Cup. Besic also adds much needed Premier League experience along with bringing some much needed youth to the team (he's 26) I'm excited to see how this one pans out. So, did United have a good transfer window? Yes, yes they did. Not only did we buy players for positions that needed strengthening but we've bought quality over quantity. Not only that, but we've bought young. Only one of the players we bought this summer was over the age of 30 and that's going to help us in the long run because as much as I love players like Billy and Dave, they are on the wrong side of 30 and relying on them to produce the goods once again this season could be a tough task. In Mousset, Robinson and McBurnie we have an attacking third that could feasibly perform at a high level for us for the next ten years. I think out of everything we've done this summer business wise, bringing down the squad age was the best thing we've done. As ever Blades fans, UTB. As DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith once said, "It's summertime" and during the summer we have pre season friendlies. Although at times they can be pretty banal, they do let fans have a look at new signings and potential new tactics as well as travelling to places they may not see their team usually play. For Sheffield United this summer, we visited places like Portugal and the Algarve, France and the city of Reims and most importantly, Burton. So now it's all done and dusted, lets have a recap of the summer games.
Real Betis vs Sheffield United Date: 12th July Score: 0-1 Scorer(s): David McGoldrick So a trip to sunny Portugal was first up on the agenda and it was a good start to pre season as United came away with a pretty convincing 1-0 victory over a Betis team fresh off a 10th placed finish in La Liga. United implemented a high pressing system to begin this game and that seemed to unsettle Betis. United had the best chances early on with Leon Clarke and Billy Sharp being played in on goal. Betis nearly did open the scoring however Kieron Freeman managed to clear athletically off the line to keep the game level. The goal came when a clearance from the Betis keeper didn't go far and John Lundstram managed to get a header on it that played in McGoldrick who coolly slotted past the keeper for the only goal of the game. United had to do a bit of defending after this but Betis never really threatened. United also gave debuts to then record signing Luke Freeman and the returning Phil Jagielka. All in all, a strong start to pre season! Burton Albion vs Sheffield United Date: 16th July Score: 2-1 Scorer(s): Burton - John Brayford, Marcus Harness Sheffield United - Billy Sharp How quickly fortunes can change in football eh? One day your beating Real Betis and the next your losing to Burton Albion. United started well with Billy Sharp doing what he does best and it looked like United would go onto secure another win in pre season, however, just before half time former Blade John Brayford popped up and equalised for The Brewers. Despite this set back, you'd think United would have enough to turn over Burton. They didn't. Thanks to a Marcus Harness screamer late on, Burton came away with the win. United were handing out debuts again, this time to new (not for long) record signing Callum Robinson. Northampton Town vs Sheffield United Date: 20th July Score: 0-2 Scorer(s): Oli Norwood (2) After the relative disappointment of losing to Burton, United got back to winning ways at League 2 Northampton with United returning to the ground that saw the beginning of our rises through the leagues. Two first half Oli Norwood penalties were enough to see off The Cobblers and it was a good way to put the result against Burton behind us. No new signings to report, although Robinson got his first full start as a Blade and impressed by all accounts. Chesterfield vs Sheffield United Date: 23rd July Score: 0-5 Scorer(s): Billy Sharp (3), Callum Robinson, Luke Freeman A five star Blades performance, paired with a hat trick from Billy Sharp, was more than enough to see off non league Chesterfield. It's hard to believe that 4 years ago we were facing off for a spot in the League One play offs and now the teams are separated by 4 divisions. United got off to a quick start with Sharp opening the scoring followed closely by a first goal for Robinson. Chesterfield failed to stem the bleeding and United smelled blood in the water and ran riot in the second half with Sharp doubling up his tally for the day just after the hour mark. Sharp then completed his hat trick around the 75th minute mark with a delightful move that ended with Sharp chipping it into the Chesterfield net. Luke Freeman finished the rout with a simple finish into an empty net thanks to good work from David McGoldrick. An impressive showing for United and another impressive game for Robinson. Barnsley vs Sheffield United Date: 27th July Score: 1-4 Scorer(s): Barnsley - Cameron McGeehan Sheffield United - Ben Osborn, Callum Robinson (2), Luke Freeman Another impressive performance for United as they saw off a Barnsley side that, despite the score line, made sure United worked hard for the win. After securing his move to Bramall Lane the day before, Ben Osborn marked his debut with a lovely finish from a John Lundstram cross. United controlled the early portions of the game however did let Barnsley back into it towards the end of the first half and Barnsley did eventually level it up with a quick counter and poor defending allowing Cameron McGeehan to power past Dean Henderson. United did take back the lead shortly after this however with a stunning finish from Callum Robinson. From this point on there was only one winner as United turned on the style. Robinson grabbed a second after finishing off a cross from Luke Freeman. Freeman then got in on the scoring himself, rounding off a very impressive second half performance from United. There were two debuts with Ben Osborn and the returning Dean Henderson making starts for United Stade de Reims vs Sheffield United Date: 3rd August Score: 3-1 Scorer(s): Stade de Reims - Alaixys Romao, Remi Oudin, Xavier Chavalerin Sheffield United - Callum Robinson A disappointing end to pre season with United being ultimately outclassed by Ligue 1 outfit Stade de Reims. United did take the lead early on with Callum Robinson scoring a corker of a volley. That was as good as it got for United with Reims equalling it up just before the half hour mark with Romao poking home after Henderson failed to claim the ball from a free kick. Reims kicked on and took the lead shortly after half time and made it three quickly after that. So it wasn't a great performance for the Blades but it was a good run out against a good Ligue 1 outfit. Also appearing was new record signing Oli McBurnie who made an appearance in the second half. In the end, United came out of pre season with 4 wins and 2 losses. The results may not have been the best but pre season isn't really about results but getting the team back up to speed and ready for the new season. All in all, it's just great to have United back playing football again and I'm really looking forward to Saturday against Bournemouth. As ever, UTB. |
