Here's something new for the blog, a book review! So as you can tell by the title, I'll be taking a look at local journalist Danny Hall's recent book release about Chris Wilder's time as Blades boss. Lets start out by saying that the book is good. VERY good. To say that Sheffield United are team who have been around for around about 129 years, there's not a lot of books written about them. Or, if they were written, they are out of print or lost to the test of time. Think about it, what Sheffield United books have been released to the general public in the past 10 years? There was the biography... and that's about it. So its good to see United once again being represented on bookshelves again.
The book takes a look at the very end of the Adkins reign at United and takes an in depth look behind the scenes of what has being going on at the club from then to the end of our maiden campaign in the Championship. Hall is an affable narrator and weaves interviews with Wilder and his players as a backdrop to a review of the his first two seasons. Alongside Hall's reviews are pieces written by players key to the revolution that has gone on since Wilder took over. Players like Mark Duffy, David Brooks and Richard Stearman are brought in to discuss how they feel Wilder has had an impact on the club and their various careers. These parts of the book are particular highlights with Duffy, Jake Wright and Reagan Slater being the cream of a very fruitful crop of insights. Also intertwined into the reviews and the player insights are pieces written by fans. These give the reader an insight into the feelings on the terraces of how Wilder has changed a team that was on the ropes into a team that have become a challenger in the Championship once again. Again these parts are extremely entertaining and show to the reader the dry wit and self deprecation that I think only United fans are capable of mastering. The book comes in at a surprisingly small 250 pages and I managed to finish it in around 4 days. However, don't let the small page count put you off because what the book lacks in length, it more than makes up for in content and is probably the best book that has ever been written on Sheffield United up to this point. Final Score: 4/5
